How to Delete Google Search History
Google Search history and browser history are related, but they are not the same thing. Browser history is stored by the browser on your device. Google account activity can be stored by Google when you are signed in and activity controls are enabled.
Browser history vs Google account activity
If you search Google in Chrome, the page visit may appear in Chrome history. Separately, the search itself may appear in your Google account activity. Deleting one does not always delete the other.
This is why users sometimes clear Chrome history and still see search suggestions or account activity later. The cleanup target was different.
Delete the browser-side record
- Open the browser you used for Google searches.
- Open clear browsing data or history settings.
- Select browsing history and choose the time range.
- Clear the data.
Review Google account activity
For Google-side activity, visit your Google account activity controls while signed in. Review Web & App Activity, search history, YouTube history, and auto-delete settings. Use Google's own controls to delete activity by time range or category.
Do not rush through account cleanup if you rely on personalization, saved places, or recommendations. Removing activity can change what Google shows you.
What this does not do
- It does not remove records from websites you clicked after searching.
- It does not remove employer, school, router, or ISP logs.
- It does not make old screenshots, downloads, or saved bookmarks disappear.
- It does not make you anonymous online.
